Hand Stitched Strawberries! 🍓

How adorable is this little sewing project?! It’s simple and entertaining enough for my 6 year old daughter to do with little assistance, the hand stitching practice is great, and the results are darling!

Here’s how we do it!

We simply use materials we have on hand-

  • Needle & thread
  • Red or pink fabric
  • Green felt for the leaves
  • Jute twine for the stem
  • Poly-fil stuffing

It’s pretty flexible! You could use green ribbon or yarn for the stems. What I particularly love about this project is that strawberries aren’t perfect shapes, so these don’t have to be either! Point in case- check out THIS strawberry we just found in our latest grocery store purchase:

Crazy, right?! I’ve never seen one like this before. The picture doesn’t even do it justice. Nature is awesome.

First, start with a circle. We use a bowl.

Take your circle and cut it in half. (Use the other half to make a second strawberry! ❤️)

Take one of the pieces and fold it in half, right side together. Cut the bottom corner a bit if you want the strawberry to be more round at the bottom.

Stitch upwards along the open edge (shown above), tie at the top, and flip it right side out.

You’ll have a nice cone-shaped bowl. Next we stitch the stem on so it’s in place and secure.

Sew a running stitch all around the top edge, pull it a bit, and stuff it!

Pull it tight and tie it shut. Cut your leaves if you haven’t already. It seems to work best with 6-8 leaves. They don’t need to be perfect, and look best when they’re long with a wider bottom and pointy tips!

We like to fold the bottom end and poke the needle through, to give the leaf a little character.

String all the leaves together and wrap them around the stem. It takes a little tugging and twisting to get them situated into the right position.

Voila! Stitch them into place tightly and tie it securely, and we have an adorable handmade strawberry!

We’re having so much fun with these, and the pile is growing! They look extra cute in these pink berry baskets I ordered online. We’re going to use them for everything!

Happy sewing!
